Qualification Format, Information & Expectations
A golf team is comprised of eight players on a Varsity team and eight players on a Junior Varsity team for a total of 16 players. At the coach’s discretion, there could be up to four additional players taken for a total of 20 available roster spots between the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.
The initial team qualification format will be a two-day, 18-hole aggregate stroke play tournament. USGA rules will govern all play and the ball should be played ‘as it lies’. All golfers will play nine holes each day on Monday and Tuesday of qualification week. The player’s qualifying score will be the total of his/her two qualification rounds. The top 15 players based on aggregate score will automatically qualify for the golf team. At the coaches’ discretion, anywhere between one and four additional players could be selected to round out the team up to the 20-player roster limit.
On each qualification day, players will be assigned to a foursome and each player will be responsible for marking his/her own score as well as the score of one other player in the same group. If a walking scorer is with a group, all players will announce their score to the walking scorer for recording in addition to keeping the score of one other player in the group. Players should sign each other’s scorecards at the conclusion of each round and all scorecards must be turned in to the coach following the qualification round. THERE IS NO PLACE FOR CHEATING IN THE GAME OF GOLF – honesty and player integrity are core tenants of the game of golf. Signing an incorrect scorecard could result in disqualification of a qualification round. If a player is disqualified from a qualification round, that player could be disqualified from competing on the PJP golf team. If a participant is found to be cheating, that player will immediately be disqualified from qualifications and unable to participate on the PJP golf team. If, during the course of play, a player finds him/herself in a situation where he/she is unsure of a ruling, the player should announce his/her concern to the other players in the group, play two balls from the point of concern through the hole, and record both scores. Upon conclusion of the round, the players should present the issue to the coach before signing and turning in the scorecard.
Following the two qualification rounds, coaches will begin to notify players of their status for the season. In the event that further player evaluation is necessary, an additional third and/or fourth round of qualification dates are available to be used at the coaches’ discretion.
The initial Varsity roster will be comprised of the top 10 players from the two-day match qualification process and the initial Junior Varsity roster will be comprised of the second ten players from the two-day match qualification process. The top eight players will start in the first Varsity match. The #7, #8, #9 and #10 players will form a rotation for Varsity match experience. Following initial player selection for the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams and at the discretion of the coach, players may be moved from one competitive level to another in support of the best interest of the team. A continuous qualifying average and scoring trend will be kept for all PJP players. The coach reserves the right to choose players for the Varsity and Junior Varsity sides based on but not limited to scoring average trend, attitude and/or effort.
The use of a personally-owned distance-measuring devices (DMD) such as laser range finders or GPS devices are permitted during qualification rounds. These devices must provide distance measurements ONLY. They cannot provide additional information such as slope, historical club selection, temperature or wind-speed. Sharing yardage information or the DMD among members of the foursome is acceptable. On-course usage of cell phones is strictly prohibited during the qualification rounds.
IF ANY PLAYER OR PARENTS HAS QUESTIONS SPECIFIC TO THE QUALIFICATION PROCESS, PLEASE SPEAK WITH THE COACHES.
